Okay, so I didn't like my previous gas can/jack mount that I
built. It was too hard to open and seemed pretty cumbersome. I did
not want to spend money on some overpriced aftermarket carrier, so I decided to
move the spare tire to the left to make room for a gas can and jack on the
original carrier.
 To simplify
the mod, I used my plasma cutter to cut out the two right hand rods, I will
leave the left one in place and reuse it. |
 Here is the
test fit for the C channel that will be added to extend the factory tire
carrier. The two rods that I cut out will be welded to this.
Note how it is notched for the zirk fitting on the pivot. |
 Another shot
of the extension before final weld. |
 Here is the
extension welded on and the rods in place. |
 I welded in a
vertical tube to brace the carrier and to provide a place to mount the gas
can rack. You can see the mounts for the hi-lift mounted on the stock
carrier at the top and bottom. |
 Here is
everything mounted. The tail lights are still visible and everything
clears the body when it's opened. |
 Here is how
the gas can is mounted to the vertical bar. I used some 1 1/2" box
steel braced, and added some tabs so that the mount can be removed. |
 I had a long
debate with myself as to how to mount the can. Mounting at an angle
seemed to be the best option to properly clear the body and to not stick out
too far. |
