The stock 6" rear speakers in the Defender are wimpy, and if they are
like mine, then they are probably trashed. I wanted to add some extra
secure storage space and upgrade to some nice 3-way 6x9 speakers. The best
option in secure storage that also incorporates speakers is the Tuffy model 20
rear storage boxes. They cost $320 shipped to my door. Optional arm
rest pads can usually be found for about $30.
 All four of
my stock Land Rover 6" speakers looked like this! I replaced the front
ones with some 3-way 6 1/2" ones. |
 Here are the
speaker boxes. The locks are high security and pry resistant.
Plus I can have them keyed to matched my Tuffy center console. |
 Here is an
inside view of the box. You can see the lock, and the slots that make the
lock pry resistant. |
 This is the
supplied aluminum baffle to enclose the speakers. It's a perfect fit. |
 To get the
best sound out of the boxes, I line everything in Dynamat. This will
make a noticeable difference and prevent that "tin" sound. |
 Here is the
6x9 installed. I bought all four speakers, plus the Dynamat online for
$100. |
 With the old
speakers removed, I was left with this open void and wires hanging out.
Several manufacturers sell a spacer to enclose this gap. I chose
another option... |
 I bent up
some sheetmetal (I wish I would have used aluminum - duh) in the same shape
as the original rear speaker enclosures. |
 Here are the
two panels ready for paint. |
 And the panel
installed after two coats of black. These probably would have looked
better in bare aluminum. |
 And the final
install. The system sounds 100 times better, now I can't wait until
summer so I can take the top off and crank the tunes!!! |
