So I needed a place to put a gas can and my Hi-Lift jack
but wanted to keep the original spare tire carrier, and I did not want to drill
any holes in the body. My solution was to fabricate the carrier below that
is welded to the rear bumper and bolts to the rear crossmember for support.
 This is the
space that I will be trying to squeeze the gas can and jack in. I
wanted to make sure the license plate was not covered up, as well as giving
the carrier enough room to swing open. |
 This is the 5
gallon gas can I will be using. I usually use the Blitz military
style, but thought I would try this one. |
 The first
thing I did was to fabricate a pivot plate. The bottom plate is 1/2"
steel with a 7/16" Grade 8 bolt. The back bracket will bolt to the
rear crossmember. The bottom plate will be welded to the bumper. |
 This is the
main part of the carrier during mock up. |
 I used some
angle iron to make the base for the gas can, using my plasma cutter to notch
for the bends. |
 Okay, so this
looks complicated, but it's not. I have a tendency to engineer as I go
along! |
 Here is the
carrier mounted in the open position. |
 When the
carrier is closed, the vertical bar on the carrier rests against the spare
tire stop. A hitch pin then secures the gas can carrier to this
bracket. I secured a nylon washer with rivets to prevent rubbing. |
 It's hard to
see in this picture, but this is from the top looking down on the vertical
mount secured to the spare tire stop |
 And this is
the final install. The gas can sticks out just as far as the tire, so
it does not affect my departure angle. |
 I mounted a
Hella light to the bottom of the carrier and tied it in to the stock backup
light. |
